Can You Use Claude or ChatGPT With Xero in NZ? A Plain-English Guide for Business Owners
Short answer: yes. Xero now connects to both Claude and ChatGPT, so you can ask plain-English questions about your own numbers, like who owes you money or what your cash looks like next month. You need an active Xero subscription, and you still check every answer before you act on it.
A lot of business owners treat Xero as the accountant's tool. You send the receipts, they look at the reports, and the numbers stay a bit of a mystery until tax time. These new connections change that, because you can ask a question in everyday words and get an answer built from your live books.
Here is what that looks like, how to get started, and the privacy checks I would do before connecting anything.
What can Claude and ChatGPT do with your Xero data?
Xero announced its Claude integration on 12 May 2026, in a media release issued from Wellington. According to Xero, you can bring your financial data into a Claude conversation and ask about things like your cash position, overdue invoices or profit trends. The data is pulled live, not from a static export, and the answers link back to Xero so you can open the full report behind them.
ChatGPT has a Xero plugin too. Xero's product blog says it is live, and describes questions and workflows built on your profit and loss, balance sheet, invoices and bills.
In practice, that means questions like these:
- Which invoices are overdue, and who is the most overdue?
- How did my profit this quarter compare with the last one?
- What is my cash position today?
- Can you explain this profit and loss report in plain English?
- Can you draft a polite message to a client with an overdue invoice?
How do you connect Xero to Claude or ChatGPT?
The exact screens change as Xero and the AI tools update, so check their current help pages for the menu steps. The order of things stays the same:
- Check your Xero subscription is active. Xero's release names no specific plan tier, only an active subscription. If you are unsure what your plan includes, ask Xero or your bookkeeper.
- Have a Claude or ChatGPT account ready. Pick the one you already use.
- Connect Xero from the AI tool's settings. Choose the organisation you want it to read. If you run more than one business, connect one at a time.
- Start with questions you can already answer. Ask for your overdue invoices when you know roughly who owes you. That is how you learn how the tool behaves before you rely on it.
- Check the answer against Xero. Every answer links back to your books for a reason.
Where does Xero's own AI fit in?
Xero has AI inside the product as well. IT Brief New Zealand reported that in March 2026 Xero rolled out an updated Analytics experience in Australia and New Zealand, with dashboards, AI-generated insights and a cash flow forecasting tool, available within existing subscriptions.
The forecast uses predicted payment dates, so it is only as good as your invoices and bills are up to date. That point applies to every tool in the table below.
| Tool | Where it lives | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Xero Analytics and Cash Flow Manager | Inside Xero | Forecasting cash from the invoices and bills already in your books |
| Claude with Xero | Claude | Asking questions across your numbers and getting plain-English explanations |
| ChatGPT with Xero | ChatGPT | Asking questions across your numbers and drafting follow-up messages |
Is it safe to connect your books to an AI tool?
Two separate questions sit under this one: what Xero does with your data, and what the Privacy Act 2020 expects from you.
On the first, Xero's release says the financial data you share is used only within your session, and that proprietary business data is not used to train Claude's models.
On the second, law firm summaries of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner's guidance (Russell McVeagh, MinterEllison) say the Privacy Act applies to generative AI tools like any other way of handling personal information. The Commissioner's general recommendation is not to put personal or confidential information into these tools unless you have first worked through the risks. Your Xero file holds client names, email addresses and perhaps staff pay, so it counts.
Before you connect, I would do four things:
- Decide who in your business can connect it. One named person is easier to manage than everyone.
- Write a short note on why you are using it. A paragraph on what it is for and what it is not for.
- Check your privacy policy. It should tell clients how their information is handled.
- Ask your accountant. They may already have a view on how they want AI used with your file.
I am not a lawyer, so if your business holds sensitive client information, get advice specific to you. For more on how we think about privacy and safety, read our approach to AI ethics, safety and privacy.
What does AI still get wrong with your books?
Xero's own blog is clear that the first pass is for review, not a final answer. Accountants and business owners validate the results and make the final decisions.
I would add one practical point. If your invoices are coded inconsistently or your bank feed has not been reconciled for three months, the tool answers questions about a messy picture. Clean books give you good answers. This is where the Finance Masterclass sits next to the AI work: understanding your numbers is what lets you spot a wrong answer.
Where to learn this with someone beside you
There are two ways we can help, depending on where you are stuck.
If setting up Claude is the sticking point, the AI Foundations Masterclass is a full day in Auckland CBD where we set Claude up on your own laptop. It is $760 for members and $950 for non-members, plus GST.
If the numbers themselves are the sticking point, the Finance Masterclass is about financial literacy and cashflow, with a Xero expert, and includes dashboard setup. It is $480 for members and $600 for non-members, plus GST. The next date on our site is Friday 13 November 2026.
If you are comparing options first, our guide to what AI training costs in NZ lays out the market.

Can I use ChatGPT with Xero in NZ?
Yes. Xero's product blog says its plugin in ChatGPT is live. You connect it to your Xero organisation and ask questions about your profit and loss, balance sheet, invoices and bills. Check Xero's current help pages for the steps.
Do I need a particular Xero plan to connect Claude?
Xero's media release names no specific plan tier. The only requirement it states is an active Xero subscription. If you are unsure what your plan includes, ask Xero or your bookkeeper.
Does Xero use my financial data to train Claude?
Xero says the data you share is used only within your session and that proprietary business data is not used to train Claude's models. That covers Xero's side. Your own obligations under the Privacy Act 2020 still apply to client information in your books.
Will AI replace my bookkeeper or accountant?
No. Xero's own blog says the first pass is for review and that accountants and business owners make the final decisions. AI helps you ask better questions of your numbers faster. Your accountant still checks the work.
