Claude vs ChatGPT for Business: A Founder's Guide

As a registered Claude Partner, here's how we help founders choose between Claude and ChatGPT for real business workflows: automation, project knowledge, and data privacy.

Most founders we work with are not asking which AI is smartest. They want to know which one to put their business inside. That is a different question, and the honest answer is: it depends on the workflow.

At re:ampd we are a registered Claude Partner, and we also use ChatGPT every day. This guide is the conversation we have with members week after week: where each tool wins for business use, and how to choose without overthinking it.

The short version

Claude is the better business writer, the safer default for client work, and the stronger thinking partner on long, nuanced tasks. ChatGPT is the better generalist, has the deepest tool and integration ecosystem, and is faster for quick lookups, code, and image generation.

If you only have budget for one seat per team member, most NZ small businesses we coach get more value from Claude. If you can afford both, run both. The combined cost is trivial compared to the time you get back.

1. Business automation and integrations

ChatGPT has a head start on the integration ecosystem: custom GPTs, a large plugin and connector library, and tighter ties into Microsoft 365 via Copilot. If your team lives in Outlook, Excel, and Teams, ChatGPT slots in faster.

Claude has been catching up quickly with Projects, Computer Use, and a growing list of native integrations (Google Workspace, Slack, Jira, Notion, and more). For founders running on Google Workspace plus a handful of SaaS tools, Claude now connects to most of what you actually use.

Pick ChatGPT when: you are Microsoft-first, want custom GPTs your team can share, or you need image generation inside the same tool.

Pick Claude when: you want one assistant that reads across your Google Drive, Slack and Notion to draft, summarise and plan without you copy-pasting context every time.

2. Project knowledge and long context

This is where Claude pulls ahead for most business use cases. Claude Projects let you load a body of knowledge once: brand guidelines, tone of voice, pricing, FAQs, past proposals, your strategy doc. Every chat inside that Project starts with that context already loaded.

ChatGPT has a similar feature in custom GPTs and Projects, but Claude handles long, messy documents more reliably. We routinely drop long board packs, full transcripts, and multi-document briefs into Claude and get useful synthesis back.

If your business runs on documents (proposals, contracts, reports, SOPs), Claude is the safer default.

3. Writing quality and voice

For client-facing copy, internal strategy docs, LinkedIn posts, and anything where voice matters, Claude is our default. It is more measured, less prone to AI tells, and easier to coach into your tone.

ChatGPT writes well too, but its default voice is more generic and you spend more prompts pulling it back from corporate filler. For founders who care how their business sounds, that compounding effort matters.

4. Data privacy and trust

Both Anthropic (Claude) and OpenAI (ChatGPT) offer business and enterprise plans where your data is not used for training. Read the plan you are on, not the headline.

Two practical points for NZ founders:

  • Use a paid business plan, not a personal free account, for anything client-related. Free tiers have weaker data protections on both platforms.
  • Anthropic has built its brand around AI safety and predictable behaviour. That positioning matters for regulated industries (finance, health, legal) and for boards that want to see a considered AI policy.

Neither tool is a substitute for your own privacy policy, client consent, and good judgement about what you paste in.

5. Cost

Pricing is close enough that it should not be the deciding factor for a small team. Both sit around NZ$30 to NZ$50 per user per month on business plans, with enterprise tiers above that. Decide on workflow fit first, then size the seats.

How we choose at re:ampd

We run both. Claude is our default for: strategy work, client proposals, long documents, brand voice, board prep, and anything we will publish. ChatGPT is our default for: quick research, code, image generation, and one-off tasks where speed matters more than nuance.

Most of our members land in the same place once they have used both for a fortnight.

A simple decision framework

  • You write a lot, in a specific voice, for clients or your audience. Start with Claude.
  • You live in Microsoft 365 and want one assistant across Outlook, Excel and Teams. Start with ChatGPT (via Copilot).
  • You want one tool to read your Google Drive, Slack and Notion and act on them. Start with Claude.
  • You need image generation, code, and broad tool integrations in one place. ChatGPT.
  • You are in a regulated industry or your board cares about AI safety posture. Claude.
  • You can afford both. Run both. Stop optimising and start using them.
